Units inspiring Christian Peace Education

Achieving sustainable peace requires collaboration across political, international, and local community levels. These course units are designed to empower local communities to actively participate in this process.

Rooted in a Christian perspective, these units provide a supportive platform within church services and small groups. This platform is able to deal with grief—an often overlooked catalyst of conflict—and fosters trust and unity within society.

The content was developed with a team of local people and practiced within a specific context in East of DRC. Recognizing the low educational levels prevalent in rural areas and our goal of enabling widespread multiplication of the material, we focused on four guiding principles:

a) Simplify content to ensure clear understanding.
b) Use visual handouts to aid memorization.
c) Engage participants emotionally to challenge attitudes (questions, discussion).
d) Limit content to one page to respect oral traditions.

Since every culture is unique and every conflict has its specific history, these units require adoption to fit different contexts. If this material inspires you to develop context-specific units that strengthen your church’s capacity for peacebuilding and healing, then this resource has fulfilled its purpose.

It is crucial to develop the material together with a team and translate it into the local language (mother tongue) to truly reach people’s hearts. In our case, we use Swahili in the DRC and Dinka-Rek in South Sudan.

May God strengthen you in your commitment. Remember His promise: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

Hatred and bitterness represent some of the most profound challenges in conflict zones. They cannot be eliminated through punishment. They distort the desire for justice into a cry for revenge. Peace sprouts when we commit ourselves to walking towards a joint future
